Taking an interest in art

That art can be a good investment is amply demonstrated by the incredible sums of money that works by famous painters can command at auction. The million dollar Van Goghs, however, represent just one extreme of the art business and there are many outstanding works by modern masters and contemporary artists to be had at affordable prices. Galerie Brockstedt OHG deals in a wide range of famous and not so famous works and serves clients such as museums, other galleries and private collectors.

The art world is a difficult one for the amateur to gain a real understanding. “Most people have an instinctive feeling for what they like, but this does not help them judge how much a work is worth. This is where our years of experience come in to help them get the best value for money possible,” says Gallery Owner and Manager Boris Brockstedt. Galerie Brockstedt was founded in 1957 by the current owner’s father in Hanover. A year later it moved to Hamburg. The Berlin gallery was not opened until 1992. “There are 284 art galleries in Berlin, making the city an important centre for art dealing. We rank among the largest of these and are one of only a few to deal in works by modern masters,” says Mr. Brockstedt.

Impressive portfolio

A browse through Galerie Brockstedt’s website shows what works are currently on offer. The gallery generally includes pieces by renowned modern masters such as Chagall, Otto Dix, Picasso, Kandinski, Hundertwasser, and Paul Klee, to mention only a few, as well as works by contemporary painters and sculptors. “Our success as a gallery comes from the substantial experience we have been able to acquire over the years,” says Mr. Brockstedt. Part of this expertise is concerned with verifying the authenticity of the works it handles. “The question of authenticity is one that always comes up. We use our expertise to guarantee the provenance of works and to ensure that they are not stolen or forged,” says Mr. Brockstedt. The gallery is an expert at researching the history of a work and takes all possible measures to ensure it is not caught out.

Exhibitions

The gallery is a regular exhibitor at international art fairs and also runs four or five in-house exhibitions each year. As well as advising clients on acquisition and disposal of their works of art, the gallery can also give advice about putting works of art on loan. “Our goal in the medium term is to open a further gallery abroad to support our international activities,” concludes Mr. Brockstedt.
